“Never Witnessed Such Grim Times in My 85 Years,” Says Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind President on Pahalgam Attack and Rising Hate Politics

New Delhi: Addressing a packed press conference at the Madani Hall of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind’s headquarters following the conclusion of a two-day working committee meeting, President Maulana Arshad Madani expressed deep concern over the current state of the country. In an emotionally charged voice, he said, “In my 85 years of life, I have never seen such troubling times in India.”, reported the Dawat News.
Without mincing words, Maulana Madani stated that the foundation of the current regime is hatred. “Their only ideology is to spread hatred, divide the people on religious lines, and secure power. Sadly, the government shows no intention of doing anything that brings peace and prosperity to the public—like generating jobs, boosting businesses, or improving living standards,” he remarked.
Commenting on the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, he raised serious concerns about security failures. “How could such an attack happen in a heavily militarized zone? Where was the security when over two to three thousand tourists were present? How did the terrorists reach such a location and flee unhindered?” he questioned.
Maulana Madani further said, “Every murder of an innocent person is a grave sin—even the killing of a cat is unacceptable in Islam. Those who commit such acts are inhuman.” He also condemned any form of oppression and reiterated that bulldozer actions against actual terrorists might be justified—but targeting innocent families based on suspicion is unjust and unacceptable.
He pointed out that local people, not security forces, were the first to assist victims and transport the injured to hospitals, risking their own lives. “Isn’t this a major security lapse?” he asked.
On questions about the political environment, Maulana Madani said, “A country progresses with love and unity—not hate. Unfortunately, if this path of hatred is not stopped, not just Muslims but every citizen will find it hard to breathe freely.”
Regarding amendments to the Waqf laws, he criticized them as interference in religious matters. “These changes appear to be aimed at seizing Muslim religious properties. Our fight is not against any person or the public but against the government that is intruding into our religious rights,” he explained.
Maulana Madani emphasized that while his organization does not advocate taking to the streets, peaceful protests within constitutional limits are essential. “We are peace-loving people, and our protests should be lawful and civil,” he said, highlighting that Jamiat has already organized three peaceful mass gatherings across the country.
Referring to the affidavit submitted by the government in court, he dismissed it as false and expressed faith in the judiciary. “We believe the Supreme Court will deliver justice based on truth and fairness,” he said.
On Islam being linked to terrorism, Maulana Madani strongly refuted the claim: “Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world because it is rooted in truth, justice, and peace. The claim that Islam promotes terrorism is a blatant lie. In fact, Islam strictly prohibits killing the innocent.”
