A major new work by Islamic scholar, physician, and policy analyst Dr. Javed Jamil seeks to reframe contemporary scientific thought through the epistemological framework of the Qur’an. Titled Contemporary Sciences in the Light of Qurʾān, the 568-page volume has been described by scholars as one of the most comprehensive recent attempts to engage modern scientific disciplines from an Islamic perspective.
Published by Mission Publications, New Delhi, the book examines a broad range of subjects—including cosmology, evolutionary biology, economics, medical sciences, public health, and governance—while proposing what the author calls “Applied Islamics,” a framework that advocates the practical application of Qur’anic principles to address contemporary intellectual, scientific, economic, and social challenges.
The book has been previewed by Dr. Abid Faheem, a scholar of Social Medicine and Community Health from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), who describes it as a “unique revolutionary work deserving world attention.” According to him, the volume represents the most comprehensive statement yet of Dr. Jamil’s long-standing intellectual project aimed at presenting Islam as a holistic framework for understanding both the natural world and human society.
A Critique of Contemporary Scientific Paradigms
At the heart of the book lies the argument that many contemporary scientific theories and global governance systems have become heavily influenced by economic and political interests rather than objective truth. Dr. Jamil contends that the Qur’an should serve not merely as a source of spiritual guidance but also as a framework for evaluating and, where necessary, revising prevailing assumptions in modern science.
The opening section introduces the concept of “Economic Fundamentalism,” which the author defines as the dominance of corporate and commercial interests over global policymaking, scientific research, and social values. According to the book, this economic order has encouraged the commercialization of behaviours traditionally discouraged by religion while marginalizing moral and ethical considerations.
Science and Faith in Dialogue
Subsequent chapters examine theories relating to the origin of the universe and biological evolution. While acknowledging the scientific significance of models such as the Big Bang Theory, General Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics, Dr. Jamil argues that these theories remain philosophically incomplete without recognizing a divine Creator and Sustainer.
The book also presents a detailed critique of Darwinian evolutionary theory, drawing on examples from virology, parasitology, genetics, reproductive biology, and ecology to question whether gradual evolutionary processes alone adequately explain the complexity and interdependence observed in living organisms. The author argues that these observations are more consistent with the Qur’anic concept of purposeful creation.
Public Health Through an Islamic Framework
A substantial portion of the volume focuses on public health and medicine. Here, Dr. Jamil proposes what he terms a “Dynamic Paradigm of Health,” integrating physical, moral, familial, and social well-being into a unified model.
Drawing upon data from international health agencies and published scientific literature, the author argues that Islamic teachings regarding alcohol, gambling, illicit sexual relations, intoxicants, and dietary regulations have significant public health implications. The book also discusses issues such as pandemics, mental health, abortion, environmental governance, and healthcare policy from an Islamic perspective.
Vision for an Alternative Global Framework
The concluding section outlines a broader vision for applying Islamic principles to public policy, governance, economics, and social development. Among the concepts introduced are “Peace Economics,” “Human Security,” “Theo-Merito-Democracy,” “True Life Expectancy,” and a “Three-Dimensional Constitution” combining fundamental rights, duties, and prohibitions.
The author also proposes the establishment of an International Institute for Applied Islamics to promote interdisciplinary research rooted in Qur’anic principles.
Scholarly Assessment
In his preview, Dr. Abid Faheem says the book distinguishes itself through its interdisciplinary scope, engagement with contemporary scientific literature, and original conceptual framework. He notes that, unlike many works addressing Islam and science, Dr. Jamil’s study draws extensively on research in medicine, epidemiology, biology, physics, economics, and public policy alongside Qur’anic analysis.
According to the reviewer, the book offers an alternative intellectual framework for scholars, researchers, policymakers, and students interested in exploring the relationship between Islamic thought and contemporary scientific and social issues.
