New Hajj Policy Sparks Concerns Among Pilgrims

New Delhi, Aug 29: Several conditions in the new Hajj policy have caused concerns among pilgrims, particularly the clause requiring a companion for pilgrims aged 65 or older. According to the policy, the companion must be 60 years old or younger, which has made it difficult for couples to apply for Hajj together. Additionally, the Indian Hajj Committee had assured that the issue of passport delays would be addressed by regional passport offices, but no resolution has been made so far, leaving many pilgrims frustrated as they repeatedly contact the Hajj Committee. These concerns were also raised by the Maharashtra State Hajj Committee, confirming that many pilgrims are facing difficulties due to these conditions. The Central Hajj Committee has acknowledged the complaints, with executive officers specifically mentioning these issues.

According to media reports, the CEO of the Hajj Committee of India, Leyaqat Ali Aafaqui (IRS) has  confirmed that the age restriction for companions of pilgrims in the reserved category has been lifted. However, this relaxation only applies to spouses, siblings, or close blood relatives. If the companion is not a close relative, the age limit of 60 years or younger will still apply. Aafaqui also mentioned that this year, male and female pilgrims will be accommodated in separate rooms. For married couples, the same rule applies to them, with men and women staying in adjoining rooms. This arrangement was fixed by the Saudi government, reportedly due to longstanding requests from Indian pilgrims concerned about privacy. However, some groups have expressed opposition to this policy, deeming it inappropriate.

The Hajj Committee CEO further explained that, given the early start of the Hajj process this year, for aspiring pilgrims to submit their original passports seven months in advance would be unfair. Instead, selected pilgrims will submit a declaration form. The original passports will be collected by state Hajj committees closer to the Hajj season, when the visa process begins.

In response to requests from state Hajj committees, the Hajj Committee of India has asked the central government to instruct all regional passport officers to expedite the issuance of passports for pilgrims nationwide, enabling them to submit their applications without delay. Once the government approves this request, the instructions will be posted on the Hajj Committee of India’s website. Aafaqui also mentioned that if pilgrims carry a copy of the relevant page from the Hajj guidelines related to passports, passport officers will be more cooperative.
