NHRC Issues Notice to Telangana DGP Over Muslim Auto Driver’s Death Allegedly Due to Custodial Torture

Hyderabad – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports regarding the tragic death of a 35-year-old Muslim auto rickshaw driver, Mohammed Irfan, in Hyderabad, allegedly following custodial torture, reported the Indian Express. The Commission has issued a notice to the Telangana Director General of Police, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.
According to reports, Mohammed Irfan died on May 13 shortly after he was taken to the Rajendranagar police station for counselling related to a marital dispute. Shocking allegations have surfaced that Irfan was physically assaulted by police personnel in the presence of his wife’s family.
While Irfan’s family insists that he died due to custodial brutality, the police have claimed that he succumbed to a cardiac arrest.
“The contents of the press report, if true, point to a grave violation of the human rights of the victim,” NHRC said in its official statement.
The incident has triggered outrage among civil rights groups and the local community, who are demanding a transparent investigation and justice for Irfan.
