Patna: A strong backlash has erupted in Bihar after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar removed the hijab of a Muslim Unani doctor during an official appointment letter distribution ceremony. Religious, social, and community organisations across the state issued a joint statement condemning the act and demanding an immediate, unconditional apology.
The incident took place at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat during the distribution of appointment letters to newly recruited Ayush doctors. According to the statement, the Chief Minister pulled the hijab from the face of a Muslim woman doctor in full public view. Several senior ministers and officials were present at the event.
Community leaders said video footage circulating publicly has triggered fear, anger, and insecurity among citizens. They rejected claims of identification or security reasons, stating the doctor’s identity would have been verified before the ceremony.
The statement said the issue involves both the dignity of a woman and respect for religious identity. It stressed that hijab represents faith, self respect, and personal dignity for Muslim women. Any interference with it on a public platform was described as unacceptable.
The organisations urged the Chief Minister to apologise to the doctor and to women across Bihar, stating the act harmed collective dignity. They warned that such conduct damages social trust and weakens the sense of safety for women.
Signatories included Imarat Shariah, Jamaat e Islami Hind Bihar, Jamiat Ulema e Hind Bihar factions, All India Momin Conference Bihar, and several other religious bodies.
The All India Progressive Women’s Association also condemned the incident. It called the act an attack on women’s dignity, religious freedom, and constitutional rights. The group demanded accountability and expressed concern over the message such actions send in public life.
