No FIR Against BJP Leader: Politicians Silent, Avoid Linking Lynching to Victim’s Religious Identity

New Delhi: Even days after a disturbing incident in which a Muslim youth named Mohammad Ashraf was lynched, no First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the BJP leader allegedly involved in the case. What has sparked further concern is the political silence surrounding the matter, with mainstream leaders refraining from acknowledging the communal angle linked to Ashraf’s religious identity, reported the Madhyamam.

The lynching took place in broad daylight, yet responses from political figures have remained muted, lacking any condemnation or demand for accountability. Activists and civil society members have pointed out that the lack of political will to address the communal nature of the crime may embolden such acts in the future.
Despite public outrage and calls for justice from human rights groups, there appears to be a deliberate effort to dissociate the incident from its religious context, with politicians and media avoiding mention of Ashraf’s identity as a Muslim. Critics argue this selective silence reflects a deeper malaise in the political system—where calling out communal violence may cost votes or invite backlash.
Legal experts have also raised questions about the delay in registering an FIR and the apparent protection being given to the accused due to political affiliations. They warn that such selective justice erodes public trust in law enforcement and democratic institutions.
As the family of Ashraf awaits justice, the silence from elected representatives continues to deepen the wounds of marginalised communities who fear becoming the next target.
