No Place for Kurdish Militants in Syria’s Future: Türkiye’s FM

Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has firmly stated that there is no room for Kurdish militants in Syria’s future, signalling a call for disbanding of YPG militia. This announcement came during Fidan’s landmark visit to Damascus, marking the first high-level Turkish-Syrian engagement since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. YPG Enternasyonel is a military unit made up of foreign fighters in the Syrian Democratic Forces.

Fidan held talks with Syria’s interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, emphasising Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty as key discussion points.

“The YPG must no longer pose a threat to Syria’s national unity,” Fidan asserted, reflecting Türkiye’s long-standing view of the YPG as an extension of the PKK, a group designated as terrorist by Türkiye, the US, and the EU.

This development comes amid Türkiye’s ongoing confrontations with the US-aligned SDF, which are led by YPG. While SDF played a pivotal role in defeating ISIS with US backing, they now face increasing threats from Ankara and shifting alliances under Syria’s emerging leadership, which holds ties with Türkiye.

Ankara, which controls significant border territories in northern Syria, continues to push for an end to US support for Kurdish factions. Meanwhile, the Syrian administration appears open to addressing the status of ISIS prison camps under their control, further complicating regional dynamics.

Fidan’s visit and his firm stance reflects Türkiye’s strategic commitment to reshaping northern Syria, ensuring that Kurdish militias do not feature in its future governance.
