Thiruvananthapuram – Several non-BJP ruled states, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Jharkhand, strongly opposed the Centre’s draft University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations at a national convention held in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. The states argued that the new regulations erode state authority over higher education.
Kerala hosted the conclave, marking the second such meeting against the draft UGC norms. The first gathering, held on February 5 in Bengaluru, saw participation from higher education ministers of six states, including Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand.
Addressing the convention, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticized the Centre for infringing upon the states’ rights in education policy, calling the move an attack on federalism.
