Norway, Ireland, and Spain Recognize Palestine as a State Despite Israeli Opposition

22 May 2024: In a significant diplomatic move aimed at promoting peace in the Middle East, Norway, Ireland, and Spain have announced their intention to formally recognize Palestine as a state on May 28. This decision has prompted Israel to recall its envoys from the respective countries in protest.

Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Store, emphasized the importance of a two-state solution for Israel’s best interest, stating that recognition of Palestinian statehood would commence on May 28. Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for equality and calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip along with increased aid.

The Palestinian Presidency welcomed the decision, highlighting its contribution to the right of self-determination for the Palestinian people and the advancement of the two-state solution.

However, Israel swiftly responded by summoning its ambassadors to Ireland and Norway for emergency consultations. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz issued a stern message, asserting that Israel would not remain silent on the matter and recalling its ambassadors for further consultations.

Despite Israel’s objections and warnings of consequences, Norway, Ireland, and Spain are set to formally enact recognition of Palestine as a state on May 28. This diplomatic development underscores the ongoing complexities and tensions in the region, as well as the divergent perspectives on how to achieve a lasting peace in the Middle East.
