OIC’s Int’l Conf. on Women in Islam to provide a comprehensive framework for women’s rights

Jeddah, Nov. 5:
The International Conference on Women in Islam: Status and Empowerment will be held here by the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The three-day conference is scheduled to start on Monday, November 6, 2023.

The conference, which ends on November 8th, is devoted to celebrating the achievements of Muslim women both historically and currently. It aims to dispel false propaganda that depicts Islam as a barrier to women’s rights and to emphasize the contributions made by women to the growth of OIC member states. The conference seeks to show that Islamic teachings have always treated women fairly and justly.

Saudi Arabia will host the conference, which seeks to develop a comprehensive framework for political and legal changes that will promote justice and give women more clout in Islamic societies.

A comprehensive document named “The Jeddah Document for Women in Islam,” which will list the main projects and tactics for accomplishing this aim, is also anticipated to be adopted at the event. Ministers, officials, academics, and thinkers of both genders will discuss women’s rights and status in Islam during the five working sessions of the conference. They will look at issues pertaining to women in modern societies as well as opportunities for Muslim women to be empowered in the workplace and in education.

Saudi Arabia presented an initiative to organize the conference focusing on the empowerment of women during the 49th Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) held in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania on March 16–17, 2023, which adopted a ministerial decision in this regard as part of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting the efforts to empower women, both domestically and in line with its keenness to support these efforts within the framework of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the international framework, which enhance the role of women in the areas of comprehensive development.
