Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has clarified that his government did not authorise the celebration of the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’ in Jammu and Kashmir schools. Speaking during a campaign in Budgam, he said that no such decision had been approved by the cabinet or the Education Minister, and that J&K’s governance would remain free from outside interference.
“This decision has not been made by the cabinet, nor has the Education Minister signed off on it. We should decide what happens in our schools without outside dictation,” he told reporters. His statement followed an order issued by the J&K Department of Culture on October 30, which directed schools to hold events marking the anniversary of the patriotic song.
The Chief Minister’s remarks appeared aimed at settling the growing controversy. He stated that such sensitive issues must be addressed within the region’s cultural and social framework. “No one from outside should dictate what our schools do or how we observe events,” he added.
During the same event, Omar Abdullah addressed questions about the absence of party MP Syed Aga Ruhullah from campaign activities, noting that participation was voluntary. He expressed confidence that the National Conference would perform well in both Budgam and Nagrota constituencies in the upcoming bypolls.
Reiterating his stand, the Chief Minister said that all government decisions would reflect the will of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, not directives from external entities.
