Lucknow – In a major crackdown on unauthorised religious encroachments, the Uttar Pradesh government announced on Sunday that over 350 illegal religious structures—including madrasas, mosques, mazars, and Eidgahs—have been identified and subjected to demolition or sealing along the Nepal border, reported the Varta Bharati.
This action follows strict directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who has reiterated that religious encroachments will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The campaign spans districts such as Pilibhit, Shravasti, Balrampur, Bahraich, Siddharthnagar, and Maharajganj, where local administrations have launched intensive drives against such constructions.
In Shravasti alone, 104 madrasas, one mosque, five mazars, and two Eidgahs were identified for illegal construction over May 10 and 11. All were served notices, and actions including sealing and demolition were initiated.
In Bahraich, 13 madrasas, eight mosques, two mazars, and one Eidgah were found to be encroaching on government land. Of these, five were sealed, and 11 structures—including eight madrasas and two mosques—were demolished.
Siddharthnagar authorities acted against 23 illegal religious structures, demolishing nine madrasas and sealing five. In Maharajganj, 29 madrasas and five mazars constructed on public or private lands without authorization have been razed.
In Lakhimpur Kheri, 13 unauthorised religious structures—including two mosques, one Eidgah, and eight madrasas—were identified. Of these, nine were sealed and three demolished.
Officials in Pilibhit reported an illegal mosque constructed over 0.0310 hectares of public land in Bharatpur village. A notice has been issued to the concerned parties, and action will follow after the 15-day response window.
In Balrampur, an under-construction madrasa on public land in Virpur Semra village was demolished on Sunday. The district has so far seen the removal of 30 madrasas, 10 mazars, and one Eidgah.
The statement emphasized that strict legal consequences await those operating unrecognized religious institutions or encroaching on public or private land under religious pretexts.
