Owaisi Backs Hijab Wearing Woman as Future PM, BJP Leaders Trigger Political Storm

New Delhi: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi stirred a sharp political debate during an election meeting in Solapur, Maharashtra, after speaking about constitutional equality and leadership rights. Owaisi compared India and Pakistan while highlighting provisions under India’s Constitution drafted under B R Ambedkar.

Owaisi said India’s constitutional framework permits any citizen to rise to the highest offices, including Prime Minister, President, chief minister, or mayor. He contrasted this with Pakistan, where top posts remain restricted to followers of one religion. Owaisi said Ambedkar envisioned an India where dignity and equal rights guide public life. He added his hope for a future where a woman wearing hijab leads the country as Prime Minister.

His remarks drew a strong response from Maharashtra minister Nitish Rane. Rane rejected the idea and claimed India as a Hindu nation with a Hindu majority. He said women wearing hijab or burqa would not rise to positions such as Prime Minister or Mumbai mayor. He urged Muslims seeking such roles to look toward Islamic nations instead.

AIMIM leader Waris Pathan responded by pointing to constitutional supremacy. He said India runs under constitutional law, not religious identity. Pathan defended Owaisi’s statement and said expressing hope for inclusive leadership violates no rule. He also rejected any form of intimidation.

The issue also attracted reactions from BJP leaders. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla questioned Owaisi’s leadership within AIMIM and challenged him to elevate marginalised Muslim voices inside his party.

The controversy surfaced amid political mobilisation ahead of Mumbai civic elections. Recent comments by BJP leaders opposing Muslim political representation added to the tension. The episode once again placed constitutional values, Muslim identity, and political inclusion at the centre of national debate.
