Palestinian-American Activist Mahmoud Khalil Sues Trump Administration for $20 Million Over Alleged False Imprisonment

New York – Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian-American activist and recent graduate of Columbia University, has filed a $20 million lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, and political retaliation due to his pro-Palestinian advocacy, reported the India Today.
The lawsuit, filed under the Federal Tort Claims Act, names the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the U.S. State Department as defendants. Khalil’s legal team contends that his arrest and subsequent detention were part of a larger effort by the previous administration to suppress political dissent, particularly activism in support of Palestinian rights.
According to the complaint, Khalil was detained for 104 days under harsh conditions and denied access to essential medication. Authorities allegedly linked him to anti-Israel protests but failed to produce any evidence connecting him to terrorism-related activities.
“This is not just about one individual. This is about protecting the fundamental rights of activists who speak out against injustice,” said a statement from Khalil’s legal representatives.
The Trump administration has yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit.
The case comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of U.S. policies surrounding free speech, especially regarding criticism of Israel and advocacy for Palestinian rights. Khalil’s legal action could set a significant precedent in addressing alleged abuses of power tied to political expression.
