Palestinian Journalist Islam Abed Killed in Israeli Airstrike on Gaza

Gaza City : A Palestinian journalist, Islam Abed, who worked for Al-Quds Today TV, was killed along with her husband and children in an Israeli airstrike that struck their apartment in Gaza City on August 31, reported the Al Jazeera.

Her tragic death raises the number of journalists killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, to 247, according to the Gaza Media Office.

The office condemned the attack, describing it as a deliberate attempt by Israel to silence the Palestinian voice and suppress the truth. It further held Israel and its allies accountable, calling such actions war crimes, as reported by the Palestinian Information Center (PIC).

The ongoing conflict began when Hamas fighters launched an assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a prolonged military campaign. Despite repeated UN Security Council calls for a ceasefire, Israel has intensified its offensive on Gaza.

The humanitarian toll has been catastrophic. Nearly 63,500 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed, while more than 159,490 have been injured. On the Israeli side, approximately 1,200 people have died, with over 250 hostages still held.

Since dawn on September 1 alone, at least 33 civilians have been reported dead due to ongoing bombardments.

Meanwhile, famine conditions are worsening. The Gaza Health Ministry confirmed that in the last 24 hours, nine people, including three children, died of malnutrition, bringing the total deaths linked to hunger to 348, of which 127 were children. Following the International Committee of the Red Cross (IPC) declaration of famine on August 22, at least 70 people, including 12 children, have died due to starvation-related causes.

The killing of Islam Abed once again highlights the dangerous conditions faced by journalists in Gaza, who continue to risk their lives to report the truth from one of the world’s deadliest war zones.
