Mahmud Hams, a Palestinian photographer, has been awarded the prestigious Visa d’Or News prize for his compelling coverage of the conflict in Gaza. Hams, 44-year-old, has been a prominent figure with AFP in the Gaza Strip since 2003. His recent work, documenting the intense and tragic effects of the conflict, has drawn international acclaim.
In a statement, Hams reflected on his extensive experience in photojournalism, noting, “I grew up in Gaza and have witnessed every conflict here over the past 23 years. This war is unique in its severity.” He expressed the profound personal impact of the conflict, revealing that many journalists, including his own friends and family, have been casualties. Hams hopes that his photographs convey the urgent need to end the suffering.
Eric Baradat, AFP’s deputy news director, praised Hams for his remarkable and often perilous work. “The conditions they face are extraordinarily challenging and their contributions will be historically significant,” Baradat remarked.
Previously, Hams earned top honors in the photo category at the 25th Bayeux-Calvados War Correspondents Prize for his poignant image of a wheelchair-bound protester during the “Great March of Return” demonstrations in 2018. Over his career, Hams has captured a wide range of critical events, from Palestinian resistance to violent Israeli military actions.
