Palestinian Women’s Football Team Arrives in Dublin for Historic Fundraising Match

17 May 2024: The Palestinian women’s football team touched down in Dublin on May 12, ahead of their landmark friendly match against Bohemians FC, set for May 15 at Dalymount Park. This match coincides with the 76th anniversary of Al Nakba, a term referring to the displacement of Palestinians during the 1948 war.

The event aims to raise funds to support the Palestinian team’s visit and to aid humanitarian efforts through organizations like Palestine Sport for Life, Medical Aid for Palestinians, and Aclaí Palestine. This initiative aligns with Bohemian FC’s ongoing support for Palestine, showcased through previous film screenings, fan displays, and fundraising activities.

Upon their arrival at Dublin airport, the team received a warm welcome from supporters waving Palestinian flags and banners. Busan Abuaita, one of the players, expressed her pride in representing Palestinian women and gratitude for the solidarity shown by Ireland. “Playing for the national team is always an amazing feeling. This match is particularly special because of the solidarity from the Irish people,” she said.

The Palestinian ambassador to Ireland echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of the match in commemorating Al Nakba and appreciating Ireland’s steadfast support for Palestine.

Bohemian FC President Matt Devany hopes the event will generate significant funds to support those affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The humanitarian crisis has intensified following a military offensive by Israel after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Recent estimates indicate over 35,000 Palestinians have been killed and 90% of Gaza’s population displaced.

As the conflict continues, with new strikes and an evacuation order issued by Israel, the situation in Gaza remains dire. The United Nations has warned of catastrophic consequences if the city of Rafa is invaded, where around 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are now residing in makeshift shelters.

Tickets for the Dublin match are still available, with options for non-attendance contributions where proceeds go directly to the designated charities.
