Parbhani: Maharashtra police have arrested over 50 individuals and filed eight cases in connection with the violence that erupted in Parbhani city on December 11. According to Special Inspector General Shahaji Umap from the Nanded range, most cases involve stone pelting, damage to public property, and unlawful assembly, reports The Times of India.
“Following the incident, protests such as rasta roko and bandh were scheduled at various locations in the Nanded range, but the situation is now under control,” Umap confirmed.
The violence began when a resident, Sopan Pawar, allegedly attempted to vandalise a replica of the Constitution of India, triggering unrest. Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar stated that peace was restored in Parbhani city by December 12. He added, “Law and order are stable, and the situation has been under control since last night.”
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam called for an investigation, suggesting that the unrest could be a deliberate attempt to defame the new state government. “Anyone involved in this conspiracy will face strict action,” he asserted.
While Parbhani observed a day-long bandh, neighbouring districts such as Jalna and Hingoli also reported similar shutdowns. Police have booked around 70-80 people under Section 191 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rioting. Authorities conducted a flag march in Parbhani city to maintain peace.
The incident has raised concerns over communal harmony and the potential political motives behind the violence.
