Bahraich: The administrative committee of Dargah Sharif, Bahraich, along with four other residents of Uttar Pradesh, has approached the Allahabad High Court after the district administration refused permission for the annual ‘Jeṭh Mela’ at the shrine of Syed Salar Masud Ghazi, reported the Dawat News.
In the petition filed by Advocate L.P. Mishra, the committee challenged the district administration’s decision, alleging that the authorities are obstructing the traditional Jeṭh Mela 2025 on political grounds to appease certain groups. The petition claims this move is neither fair nor justified.
The Jeṭh Mela, traditionally held every year in May/June following the annual Basant Mela and Urs in February, is deeply rooted in the customs and religious sentiments of the shrine’s devotees. The petitioners argue that millions of followers have strong emotional and spiritual connections to the event, which they consider their religious right.
It was further stated in the petition that the Basant Mela and Jeṭh Mela have been officially recognized since 1987 and any interference or denial of such events is arbitrary and unjust. The petition also criticizes the district administration for relying on a report that allegedly includes unrelated incidents from across the country to falsely project a threat of unrest and hinder the event.
The petition urges the court to cancel the district magistrate’s refusal letter and direct local authorities to coordinate and support the successful organization of the Jeṭh Mela 2025, which is scheduled to be held on May 15 at the dargah of Syed Salar Masud Ghazi in Bahraich.
