Pilibhit: A fresh case of alleged false accusations of cattle smuggling has emerged in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district, sparking anger among locals. Two Muslim men, Abid and Sajid, were arrested after being accused by members of Hindu nationalist groups, despite evidence presented by villagers showing their innocence.
According to reports, Abid had legally purchased a cow and calf for his friend Man Singh from a neighboring village. The transaction was documented with an official receipt issued by the village head. On September 8, while transporting the animals with his relative Sajid, the two were intercepted by members of a Hindu nationalist group. The men were beaten and later handed over to the police.
Despite efforts by Man Singh and other Hindu villagers to explain the situation, police took Abid and Sajid into custody. Both were jailed the following day. The incident caused unrest in the area, with residents condemning what they described as an unjust action carried out under pressure from local organizations.
In response, hundreds of Hindu and Muslim villagers marched together to the district magistrate’s office. They demanded justice and presented documents proving the legality of the cattle transaction. District Magistrate Gyanendra Singh ordered an immediate inquiry and assured strict action against those found guilty.
Local BJP councilor Murari Lal Goyal also criticized the incident, calling the arrests unfair and urging accountability. The case has highlighted ongoing tensions over cattle-related accusations and the misuse of such claims to target minorities.
