Raees Ahmed, Advocate of Delhi High Court and a Waqf Activist has urged the state governments to “remove current illegal occupations on Waqf properties,” and “hand them over to the Waqf Board,” complying with the March 26, 1976 letter written by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to state governments.
The Waqf Board does not seize government properties; instead, Waqf properties have been illegally occupied for decades by land mafias and state governments. This fact is proven not by anything else but by a letter written by the then Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, to the state governments.
It is noteworthy that in this letter, written on March 26, 1976, the Prime Minister warned state governments and ordered them to vacate the illegal occupations on Waqf properties, provide compensation, or pay rent at market rates.
The letter also mentioned that legal action would be taken if these instructions were not followed.
Advocate Raees Ahmed said, “Therefore, our demand from the state governments is to first comply with the Prime Minister’s letter regarding these illegal occupations and also to remove current illegal occupations on Waqf properties, handing them over to the Waqf Board.”
