Pope Francis Condemns Gaza Bombings, Labels Actions as “Cruelty, Not War” Amid Escalating Violence

In a searing condemnation of the ongoing violence in Gaza, Pope Francis denounced Israel for its recent attacks, including the bombing of children and the targeting of medical facilities. His remarks came ahead of his Christmas greetings to the Roman Curia.

“Yesterday they didn’t let the Patriarch [of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa] enter Gaza as they had promised, and yesterday children were bombed. This is cruelty. This is not war,” the Pope declared. He went further to underscore the gravity of the situation, describing it as genocide rather than mere warfare.

The Pope’s comments come amidst reports that Israel’s latest offensive has claimed the lives of at least 50 people and included an attack on the only functioning hospital left in Gaza. The relentless bombardment has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis, leaving countless civilians without access to essential medical care.

The Holy See has consistently advocated for peace and the protection of innocent lives, with Pope Francis urging the global community to act against the escalating atrocities. His critique highlights the moral imperative to address the plight of those suffering in the conflict, particularly children and other vulnerable groups.

As the Christmas season unfolds, Pope Francis’ powerful message calls for reflection on the values of compassion and justice in the face of overwhelming cruelty.
