Prayagraj Mahakumbh: Muslim Man Performs Last Rites of Hindu Devotee

– Akhilesh Tripathi

Lucknow: In an extraordinary display of communal harmony, Prayagraj Cantonment Board CEO Mohammed Sameer Islam set a powerful example of Hindu-Muslim brotherhood and humanity by performing the last rites of a deceased Hindu devotee at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj.

The Mahakumbh initially saw resistance from certain groups who opposed Muslim participation, claiming they would neither be allowed entry nor permitted to conduct business. However, as the event unfolded, it proceeded peacefully, defying these divisive narratives.

During the second shahi snan on Mauni Amavasya, a tragic stampede resulted in multiple deaths. In this moment of crisis, the Muslims of Prayagraj stepped up to aid Hindu devotees, offering shelter in mosques, dargahs, shrines, imambadas, and their homes. They provided food, water, and medical assistance, saving countless lives. Grateful Hindu devotees expressed their heartfelt thanks before returning home safely.

Before the impact of this heart-warming display of unity had settled, another incident underscored the strength of humanity over religious divides.

Chhote Lal, a resident of Hardoi, had travelled with his mother, Ranno Devi, to the Mahakumbh. They were staying at an ashram in Sector 17 when, on Friday night, Chhote Lal suffered a fatal heart attack. Despite being rushed to the central hospital in Sector 2, doctors declared him dead.

In distress, Ranno Devi contacted her two other sons, urging them to come and perform their brother’s last rites. Shockingly, both reportedly refused. Overcome with grief, she pleaded with people for help.

Moved by her plight, Cantonment Board CEO Mohammed Sameer Islam intervened without hesitation. Assuring Ranno Devi that he would take care of all the funeral expenses, he made the necessary arrangements for Chhote Lal’s cremation. On Sunday, the final rites were conducted at Rasulabad Ghat with full Hindu rituals, attended by a large gathering.

Mohammed Sameer’s compassionate gesture has resonated widely, earning him immense respect. Speaking about his act, he humbly stated: “I only did what one human should do for another. Helping someone in distress is the true essence of brotherhood and humanity. By performing Chhote Lal’s last rites, I have also ensured that his mother, Ranno Devi, reaches home safely. I have done nothing extraordinary; I have simply fulfilled my duty towards humanity and brotherhood.”
