New Delhi – Congress leader and AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has strongly criticised the Modi government for abstaining from a recent United Nations General Assembly resolution that called for the protection of civilians and adherence to humanitarian laws in Gaza, as per a report by the Clarion India.
India was among the 19 countries that chose to abstain from the vote, while 149 nations voted in favor, and 12—including the United States—voted against the resolution. India justified its abstention by stating that efforts should be focused on fostering dialogue and diplomacy between the two sides in the Gaza conflict.
Priyanka Gandhi, who is also the Member of Parliament from Wayanad, called India’s stance “shameful and disappointing.” In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), she said, “60,000 people, mostly women and children, have already been killed. An entire population is being confined and starved to death, and we are refusing to take a stand.”
She accused the government of turning its back on India’s anti-colonial legacy and abandoning the moral values that once defined the nation. “Not only are we standing silent as Netanyahu annihilates an entire nation, we are cheering on as his government attacks Iran and assassinates its leadership in flagrant violation of its sovereignty and all international norms,” she said.
Gandhi further questioned how a country founded on justice, non-violence, and constitutional values could remain indifferent in such a moment. “There is no justification for this. True global leadership demands the courage to defend justice — and India has shown this courage unfailingly in the past,” she emphasized.
Urging India to reclaim its moral voice, she added, “In a world that is increasingly divisive, we must stand fearlessly for truth, humanity, and non-violence.”
Her remarks come just days before the Nilambur assembly by-election on June 19, where she is expected to campaign. Nilambur is part of the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency and has a sizable Muslim population.
Meanwhile, the Left, led by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, has also condemned Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
