Pro-Vice Chancellor Eqbal Hussain took charge as the university’s officiating Vice-Chancellor on Monday as the tenure of Najma Akhtar as Vice Chancellor ended on Sunday.
Hussain, a professor in the Faculty of Law, will serve as the Acting Vice-Chancellor till the time an appointment is made to the post.
In September, Hussain was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor. He holds a PhD from Jamia Millia Islamia. He also did his LL.M (Master of Laws), LLB (Bachelor in Laws) and BSc (Bachelor of Science) from Aligarh Muslim University.
Hussain started his teaching career in 1990 as a research associate at the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, and has also taught at Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi and Zanzibar University, Tanzania. His areas of interest are intellectual property rights, consumer protection laws, and mercantile laws and jurisprudence.
The University, in its statement, said, “Hussain highlighted how the university attained new heights under the leadership of Prof Najma Akhtar reflected in the NAAC and NIRF performance. He noted that JMI is the 3rd top-ranked university in the country in the NIRF 2023 with Grade A++ by the NAAC.”
The university stated that Hussain has assured the outgoing Vice-Chancellor that he would leave no stone unturned to uphold the interests of the institution both in academic and administrative matters.
