Prof Mohammad Mobin Appointed Vice Chancellor of Cluster University, Srinagar

Aligarh, July 9: Prof Mohammad Mobin, Department of Applied Chemistry, Aligarh Muslim University has been appointed Vice Chancellor, Cluster University of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir.

According to an order issued by the office of the Chancellor, Cluster University, Srinagar, Shri Manoj Sinha, the term of Prof Mobin’s office will be for three years.

Prof Mobin, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), UK, is an internationally acclaimed researcher in the field of Materials and Corrosion who has been engaged in teaching and research for about 40 years. He obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 1988 from Aligarh Muslim University and subsequently joined as a lecturer in 1988 and was later promoted to Professor in 2005.

In the year 2001, he joined foreign assignment at Corrosion Department, Seawater Desalination Research Institute, Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia. He has also undertaken MHRD, Government of India, three weeks Leadership for Academicians Programme (LEAP) training held at IIT(BHU) Varanasi and at the University of Cambridge, UK, designed for the purpose of preparing senior faculty for future governance roles as leaders in academic institutions.

Prof. Mobin has supervised 17 PhD, 2 M.Phil and 12 M.Sc Tech students, authored 182 research papers and contributed 38 book chapters in books from ACS, Wiley, Elsevier, Springer, RSC and De Gruyter. He has completed 40 research projects (04 industrial, 08 academic and 28 root cause failure analysis/trouble shooting projects), including three projects under international collaboration, namely with AB Alvenius Industries, Sweden, EBARA Research, Japan and Rezayat Chemica, Saudi Arabia.

He has attended about 40 conferences/workshops in India and abroad and has been awarded the NACE International India Section (NIIS) corrosion awareness award in the year 2007, NIGIS Meritorious Contribution Award 2022 (AMPP India chapter) and NCCI (National Corrosion Council of India) Meritorious award 2023 for his contribution to the field of Corrosion Science and Technology.

Prof Mobin was recently named as an inaugural Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS, a California-based company that applies artificial intelligence, data mining, machine learning, and other data science techniques to its massive database of over 200 million publications and 3 billion citations to rank over 30 million scholars and 55,000 institutions worldwide.

He has also figured in World Top 2% Scientists’ ranking by Stanford University, USA for year 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

He visited the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Almaty, Kazakhstan during June 01-30, 2024 as a Visiting Professor and participated in outlining scientific projects, conducted lectures for postgraduate and research students and provided consultation on their theses. He was also consulted as a reviewer for the faculty members’ educational programmes and scientific articles.

Earlier, he has also served as a Visiting Professor at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2014.

He has held various administrative positions, including the Chairman of the Department of Applied Chemistry (2009, 2012-2015 and 2019-2021), Vice-Chairman, Alumni Affairs Committee (continuing since 2019), founder Coordinator, University Sophisticated Instrument Facility (2011-2013), Provost of R.M. Hall, a residential hall of students (2006-2009), Deputy Proctor (2006), Superintendent of Examination (2010-2011) and Member-In-Charge (AMU Press) (2009-2010).

He has served as member of statutory bodies like Executive Council (2007-2009), Academic Council (2007-2009, 2012-2015, 2019-2021), AMU Court (2007-2009, 2015) and Board of Studies of different departments.

He was shortlisted by the search committee for the post of Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Srinagar in 2022 and for the Vice Chancellorship of Jamia Millia Islamia in 2024.

The Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Prof Naima Khatoon has congratulated Prof Mobin on his appointment to this coveted post and wished him the best for his stint as the Vice Chancellor of a notable university of Kashmir.

The Aligarh Muslim University has the honour to have given two vice chancellors consecutively to the Cluster University, Srinagar. Prof Mobin will take the charge from Prof. Qayyum Husain, also an AMU professor in the Department of Biochemistry (Faculty of Life Sciences).
