New Delhi, September 2: Jamia Hamdard has appointed Prof. M. Z. Abdin as the Officiating Vice-Chancellor of the university. He assumed charge on August 31, succeeding Prof. Asgar Ali, who had been serving as the Officiating Vice-Chancellor.
According to a press release issued by the university on Wednesday, Prof. Abdin will discharge the duties of the Vice-Chancellor in accordance with the provisions of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations governing Institutions Deemed to be Universities, 2023. He will continue in the position until a regular Vice-Chancellor assumes office.
Prof. M. Z. Abdin is a Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at the School of Chemical and Life Sciences (SCLS), Jamia Hamdard. He is a scientist, academician and administrator with four decades of research experience and more than three decades of teaching experience.
During his association with Jamia Hamdard, Prof. Abdin has held several key academic and administrative positions. These include Dean of the School of Chemical and Life Sciences, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, Director of the Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development, Finance Officer and Chairman of the Board of Studies. He has also served as a member of both the Executive Council and Academic Council of the university.
His administrative experience also includes serving as Vice-Chancellor of Singhania University, Rajasthan.
Prof. Abdin completed his Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, in 1991, with Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as minor subjects. Prior to this, he obtained his M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in Botany from Aligarh Muslim University.
With an extensive record in research and postgraduate supervision, Prof. Abdin has guided 54 Ph.D. scholars as a supervisor and 31 as a co-supervisor. He has also mentored 98 M.Sc. dissertations. His academic career has included participation in international conferences, scientific programmes and academic interactions in several countries, including the United States, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, China, Mauritius, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Iran and Bangladesh.
His contributions to science, education and academic administration have earned him 12 national and international awards and honours. Among the recognitions mentioned by Jamia Hamdard are the J.J. Chinoy Gold Medal Award in 2025, the Vigyan Ratan Award and the Bio Spectrum Public-Private Partnership Excellence Award.
Prof. Abdin has also received recognition in international rankings of highly cited and influential scientists in the field of Plant Science, reflecting his longstanding contribution to scientific research.
His appointment comes as Jamia Hamdard continues to function under the institutional framework applicable to deemed universities. As Officiating Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdin will oversee the university’s academic and administrative affairs until the appointment of a regular Vice-Chancellor.
The teaching and non-teaching staff of Jamia Hamdard extended their warm congratulations to Prof. Abdin on his appointment. They expressed confidence that his extensive academic background, research credentials and administrative experience would contribute significantly to the university’s continued growth and development.
The staff also expressed the hope that his leadership would further strengthen academic excellence and institutional development at Jamia Hamdard.

The appointment therefore brings to the university’s top administrative position an academic with extensive experience in teaching, scientific research, postgraduate supervision and university administration. His tenure as Officiating Vice-Chancellor will continue until a regular Vice-Chancellor assumes charge, as provided under the applicable UGC regulations.
