New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has approved the appointment of Professor Mohammad Shakeel as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), utilizing her powers as the Visitor of the university as per the JMI Act, 1988. Professor Shakeel, the senior-most professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at JMI, assumed office on May 22, this year. However, his appointment has now received formal approval from the President as per a report from ETV Bharat.
Professor Shakeel will hold the position until a permanent Vice-Chancellor is appointed. He holds a B.Tech and M.Tech from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and a Ph.D. from Roorkee University.
With a wealth of experience in teaching and research, Professor Shakeel has also held various administrative roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Controller of Examinations.
The appointment comes after the term of the former regular Vice-Chancellor, Professor Najma Akhtar, ended. Professor Iqbal Hussain initially succeeded her as Acting Vice-Chancellor. However, on May 22, 2024, the Delhi High Court declared Professor Hussain’s appointments as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Acting Vice-Chancellor illegal, ordering his immediate removal.
Subsequently, Professor Shakeel assumed the role of Acting Vice-Chancellor.
