13 May 2024: A wave of protests has swept through several locations across Andhra Pradesh, as citizens demand cash allegedly promised by political parties in exchange for votes ahead of the upcoming elections. The demonstrations highlight the persisting issue of cash-for-votes, with amounts ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 6,000 in different areas, exacerbating concerns over electoral integrity.
The demonstrations, occurring in at least five places, underscore the heightened tensions surrounding electoral practices as polling day approaches. Amidst rising inflation, the demand for monetary incentives from political entities has intensified, with voters expressing frustration over unfulfilled promises.
Campaigning concluded on Saturday, yet reports of cash distribution persist in certain areas, leading to discontent among voters. In Sattenapalli’s Palnadu region, residents of the 18th ward took to the streets to protest the alleged non-delivery of promised funds for votes, reflecting a growing disillusionment with traditional political practices.
Similar scenes unfolded in Pithapuram, where voters near a contesting politician’s office protested against the failure to fulfill promises of Rs 5,000 per vote, particularly affecting women voters. Police intervention was required to manage the escalating situation, highlighting the volatile nature of the issue.
In Ongole, protests erupted over the alleged distribution of Rs 5,000 per vote, triggering unrest among those excluded from receiving payments. Likewise, in Kondevaram village of East Godavari district, demonstrations ensued as individuals claimed to have been left out from the purported cash distributions.
Reports indicate that cash distribution is not confined to rural areas, with allegations emerging of similar practices in urban centers like Vijayawada. Instances of Rs 1,000 being distributed in exchange for votes at certain municipal corporators’ offices highlight the pervasive nature of the issue across diverse settings.
Moreover, candidates are facing unexpected demands from voters residing in urban complexes, with residential welfare committees seeking infrastructure improvements in exchange for support. The prevalence of such demands underscores broader concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process and the influence of vested interests.
