AMU Students Demand Union Elections Before Sir Syed Day 2025

Aligarh: Students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have renewed their demand for student union elections, which have not been held since 2019. A delegation of students submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon, urging that elections be conducted before Sir Syed Day 2025 in line with the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee Report of 2006.

The memorandum highlighted that the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines make it mandatory to conduct student union elections within four weeks of the start of the academic session. Students argued that the continued delay violates these provisions and could also be seen as disregarding court directives.

According to the students, the absence of an elected student body has negatively affected their representation, welfare, and participation in university decision-making. They stressed that a democratically elected union is essential for safeguarding student interests and for maintaining the vibrancy of campus life.

The memorandum further stated that holding elections on time is not only a matter of compliance with official recommendations but also vital for upholding AMU’s democratic traditions. Students expressed that timely elections would ensure accountability, improve student-administration dialogue, and strengthen institutional culture.

They have urged the Vice-Chancellor to take immediate steps so that elections are concluded before Sir Syed Day 2025, preserving the legacy of democratic engagement that has historically shaped the university.
