AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi Inaugurates India’s First Passport Office Inside a Metro Station

Hyderabad: A new Passport Seva Kendra has been inaugurated at the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) metro station, making passport services more accessible to citizens, especially residents of the Old City. This is the first passport office in India to be located inside a metro station.

The facility, launched by AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi and state minister Ponnam Prabhakar, is equipped with 28 counters, advanced IT systems, spacious waiting halls, and improved parking. According to the Regional Passport Office, it will handle up to 1,200 appointments daily, making it the largest passport office in the country. Other offices usually manage between 700 and 800 appointments per day. Officials said applications will be processed within a week under the upgraded system.

The office also features a Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) stall that showcases jewellery, paintings, and pottery created by tribal artisans from across the country.

The MGBS metro station was chosen due to its central location and connectivity. It is one of the busiest transit hubs in Telangana, ensuring easy access for people from different parts of the city. The new location is expected to reduce the travel burden on citizens from the Old City, who previously had to visit Ameerpet for passport services.

Dignitaries including Hyderabad district collector Harichandana Dasari, GHMC mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, regional passport officer J Snehaja, and Rajya Sabha MP Anil Yadav attended the inauguration. Leaders said the initiative reflects a push toward modern, efficient, and citizen-friendly services.
