Jaisalmer: The killing of a farmer in Dangri village has triggered strong reactions from community leaders and politicians, who demanded accountability and justice for the victim’s family. The victim, Khet Singh, was attacked late Tuesday night by three assailants while resting in his field. He later died during treatment in Barmer.
The murder led to large protests on Thursday, during which thousands gathered near Dangri. Protesters set fire to parts of the accused families’ homes and clashed with police. Security forces responded with tear gas and baton charges, detaining over two dozen people. A settlement was later reached after discussions between villagers and the administration, and on Friday the body was laid to rest under police supervision.
Jamiat Ulama Rajasthan President Qari Mohammad Amin condemned the killing as unacceptable in a civil society. He urged the administration to conduct an impartial investigation and ensure strict punishment for the guilty. He also expressed concern over inflammatory speeches made in the aftermath of the crime, which he said worsened tensions.
Former cabinet minister Saleh Mohammad also called for fair justice while criticizing political leaders for inciting youth with provocative statements. Independent MLA Ravindra Singh Bhati visited the victim’s family and questioned the police response. MP Ummedaram Beniwal blamed the BJP for escalating the crisis, accusing local authorities of failing to act on time.
Police remain deployed in Dangri, and the administration has cleared encroachments and demolished five illegal shops. The atmosphere in the village is now calm, though political debate continues.
