Hyderabad: In a significant gesture prioritising public interest, Congress MLA Bathula Laxma Reddy from Miryalaguda constituency chose to cancel his son’s wedding reception and donate the planned expenditure to farmers in need.
Reddy’s son, Sai Prasanna, was recently married, and the family had set aside ₹2 crore for a reception. With reports of urea shortage emerging in the constituency, the MLA redirected the funds to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He personally met Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, accompanied by his family, and handed over the cheque. He requested that the amount be used to provide one bag of urea each to one lakh farmers in Miryalaguda.
“This is an expression of solidarity with farmers, not only a response to necessity,” the MLA said. His act comes at a crucial time for cultivators facing difficulties in accessing fertiliser during the agricultural season.
The move also follows a controversy involving the MLA’s gunman, who was accused of diverting a truck carrying urea bags. Analysts say this step signals the MLA’s effort to restore confidence among his constituents by directly addressing farmers’ needs.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy praised the initiative, describing it as a commendable example of aligning personal resources with public welfare. He noted that the donation would bring immediate relief to thousands of farmers.
Across Telangana, the decision has sparked debate on how leaders spend personal wealth. Observers say the MLA’s action challenges conventions where political families often prioritise lavish receptions. Instead, it set an example of transforming private celebration into collective support for the community.
