New Delhi: Professor Jagdeep S. Chhokar, distinguished academic and co-founder of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), passed away at the age of 80 following a heart attack. His body has been donated to Lady Hardinge Hospital.
Prof. Chhokar, a former faculty member at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, combined scholarship with activism. In 1999, along with fellow academics, he established ADR, which has since transformed Indian electoral politics. Through persistent legal interventions, ADR ensured mandatory disclosure of the criminal, financial, and educational details of candidates contesting elections. This reform gave citizens crucial information to make informed choices and brought unprecedented transparency to the system.
Known for his uncompromising integrity, Prof. Chhokar was a fearless advocate of electoral reforms and good governance. He consistently highlighted threats to democratic values and urged citizens to remain vigilant. His writings, including contributions to Radiance, reflected his commitment to strengthening democracy through awareness and participation.
Colleagues and admirers recall him as a teacher who inspired generations and as an activist who mobilised society against corruption and abuse of power. His tireless efforts established ADR as a credible voice for reform and accountability in public life.
Prof. Chhokar leaves behind a legacy of courage, clarity, and action. His passing is a loss to the democratic movement in India, yet his vision of a transparent and participatory political system continues to guide those working for change.
