Oman’s Sufyan Mehmood Eyes Learning Experience in Asia Cup 2025

Muscat: Oman all-rounder Sufyan Mehmood is preparing for the biggest stage of his career as his team gears up for its maiden appearance in the Asia Cup 2025. The 33-year-old, who made his debut at 17, has endured a long and challenging journey in a country where cricket has limited recognition.

Oman will begin their campaign on September 12 against Pakistan, before facing India and the United Arab Emirates in Group A. For Mehmood, the tournament is about more than results. He hopes to gain experience by competing against established sides and learning from leading all-rounders. He is especially keen to interact with India’s Hardik Pandya and Pakistan’s Faheem Ashraf to understand how they handle pressure situations.

Mehmood once considered giving up cricket due to financial and academic pressures but persisted, eventually representing Oman in three T20 World Cups. His persistence was rewarded with memorable moments, including Oman’s historic win over Ireland in 2016.

Reflecting on his journey, he credited his family for their support and described his selection for the Asia Cup as a dream realized. Despite recent controversy over his comments being misinterpreted in Pakistan, Mehmood clarified that his ambition is to win for Oman and make his country proud, without animosity toward other nations.

Oman’s squad features new talent alongside experienced players, and Mehmood believes they are capable of surprising stronger teams. He views the Asia Cup as a platform to showcase Oman’s growth in cricket and inspire the next generation.
