Traffic Thatha of Coimbatore – Mohammed Sultan Passes Away at 88

Coimbatore: Mohammed Sultan, fondly called “Traffic Thatha” by residents, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88. A familiar figure on the city’s streets, Sultan spent over three decades as a traffic volunteer, assisting police officers and easing congestion in some of the busiest areas of Coimbatore.

Sultan, a resident of Tiruchy Road, began his voluntary service around 30 years ago at the Athar Jamaath Masjid on Oppanakkara Street. What started as a small effort near the mosque soon grew into a full-time commitment. Wearing his green vest and whistle, he worked tirelessly from early mornings until late evenings, regulating traffic from Gandhipuram to Aathupalam.

Community members remember him for his swift action in clearing jams and his approachable nature. “Whenever he noticed a traffic jam, he would step in immediately and restore order,” said MI Ashik Ahamed, treasurer of Athar Jamaath. Police officers also acknowledged his contributions, noting how he often worked long shifts and shared meals offered by well-wishers.

Sultan continued his service despite health challenges. He underwent hernia surgery recently and became bedridden soon after. He is survived by a son and a daughter.

On Wednesday, traffic police personnel led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S Ashok Kumar paid their respects at Athar Jamaath Masjid, where he was laid to rest. His decades of voluntary service left a lasting impression on both the police force and the public, who affectionately named him “Traffic Thatha” for his dedication.
