New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that, despite being the Leader of the Opposition, he was not allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha. He claimed there was no space for the Opposition in India.
Speaking informally with reporters, Gandhi called it an undemocratic way of functioning. He said that as per convention, the Leader of the Opposition must be allowed to speak when they rise, but he was denied at least 7-8 times recently.
Today, he revealed that something was said about him in the House, and when he stood up, the Speaker still did not allow him to speak. He called it unprecedented and undemocratic, emphasizing that he represents the principal opposition party.
Gandhi accused the government of grabbing all political space, leaving no room for the Opposition. He recalled a past instance when, during the Prime Minister’s speech on the Kumbh Mela, he wanted to speak about employment but was not permitted.
Later, around 70 Congress MPs, including Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi and Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, met the Speaker to protest against the repeated denial of Gandhi’s right to speak.
