Raja Iqbal Elected New Mayor of Delhi, AAP Boycotts Mayoral Polls

New Delhi — Raja Iqbal Singh was elected the new Mayor of Delhi on Friday following the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) mayoral elections. The polls marked the BJP’s return to the top post after a gap of two years.
Raja Iqbal Singh, formerly the Leader of the Opposition in the MCD and an ex-Mayor of North MCD, secured 133 votes out of 142, defeating Congress candidate Mandeep Singh. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), currently in power in Delhi, chose to boycott the election, reducing the contest to a direct face-off between BJP and Congress.
Out of the total votes, one was declared invalid and two were not cast due to the absence of BJP MP Manoj Tiwari. Congress secured a total of eight votes.
Following his victory, Iqbal Singh outlined his immediate priorities, which include forming the Standing Committee within a month, improving green spaces, addressing corruption and pollution, and removing certain civic user charges. He also highlighted plans to support education infrastructure and regularise eligible contractual workers under BMP rules.
Singh comes from a family with ties to Akali Dal politics and has previously served in various administrative roles, including as a councillor from GTB Nagar and head of the Civil Lines Zone of the corporation.
