New Delhi, April 17: In the latest Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams held in 2023, a significant increase was observed in the number of Muslim candidates who qualified, with 51 successful candidates compared to 30 in the previous year. This improvement reflects a notable achievement for Muslim aspirants seeking prestigious positions in the civil services.
Among the standout performers were two Muslim girls, Ruhani and Nausheen, who secured impressive ranks of 5th and 9th respectively in the all-India rankings. Their success underscores the growing representation and excellence of women from the Muslim community in competitive exams.
Furthermore, the Jamia Millia Islamia University’s coaching center contributed significantly to this success story, with 11 girls out of 31 qualifiers receiving coaching from the university’s residential coaching center.
Specifically, from the JMI Residential Coaching Center, out of 151 candidates who appeared for the written exam, 71 were selected for interviews, and ultimately 31 candidates successfully qualified for the UPSC examination.
The total pool of successful candidates in the UPSC CSE 2023 comprised individuals from diverse backgrounds, including 347 from the General category, 115 from economically weaker sections, 303 from Other Backward Classes (OBC), 165 from Scheduled Castes (SC), and 86 from Scheduled Tribes (ST). Notably, 50 successful candidates identified as Muslim, including 16 women.
Comparatively, in 2022, only 30 Muslim candidates cleared the exam, accounting for approximately 3% of the total successful candidates; the number was 25 in 2021.
The achievements of the Muslim candidates were prominently highlighted in the UPSC CSE 2023 rankings, with a detailed list of the top-performing Muslim individuals:
