New Delhi: BJP leader Rekha Gupta took oath as Delhi’s Chief Minister at a grand swearing-in ceremony at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday, marking BJP’s return after 27 years and ending AAP’s decade-long rule. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and several BJP state Chief Ministers.
Gupta, associated with BJP since 2002, previously spent nearly a decade in ABVP. She has served as Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha’s general secretary and later as its national vice-chairperson. She won the Shalimar Bagh Assembly seat, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by 29,595 votes.
Following her victory, she was elected BJP’s Leader of the House in the Delhi Assembly and met Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to stake her claim. Saxena invited her to form the government.
Parvesh Singh Verma played a crucial role in BJP’s success, defeating AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal by over 3,000 votes, delivering a major setback to AAP.
Gupta’s cabinet is expected to have six ministers, with the first meeting at 3 PM today at the Delhi Secretariat. Key agendas include implementing the Mahila Samriddhi Yojna, offering ₹2,500 monthly to eligible women, and approving the Ayushman Bharat health scheme for economically weaker sections.
With Gupta leading, BJP’s Delhi government plans to prioritize welfare policies and governance reforms.
