Renewed Controversy Surrounds Sanjauli Mosque in Shimla; Civil Society Demands Swift Action

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh: The Sanjauli Mosque in Shimla has once again become the focal point of controversy as civil society groups, notably the Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti, have issued a 15-day ultimatum to the administration, demanding the demolition of alleged unauthorized constructions within the mosque premises. This development follows a series of events over the past year that have intensified public discourse and legal proceedings surrounding the mosque.
The Sanjauli Mosque, originally constructed as a single-story structure before 1947, underwent expansions over the years, resulting in a five-story building. Local residents and various organizations have contested these additions, alleging they were constructed without proper authorization. The dispute escalated in September 2024 when large-scale protests erupted, leading to clashes and subsequent legal interventions.
In response to the escalating tensions, the Shimla Municipal Commissioner’s Court, on October 5, 2024, ordered the demolition of the top three unauthorized floors of the mosque, granting the mosque committee and the Waqf Board a two-month period to comply with the directive. The mosque committee, acknowledging the court’s decision, commenced the demolition process on October 21, 2024, bearing the costs independently due to financial constraints. Despite these efforts, the demolition faced delays, prompting further dissatisfaction among local groups.
As of February 2025, the Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti has expressed frustration over the perceived inaction and prolonged delays in resolving the issue. Advocate Jagat Pal, representing the Samiti, emphasized that according to revenue records, the land on which the mosque stands is government-owned. He raised concerns about potential tampering with documents and urged for immediate action, warning that failure to address the matter by March 15 would compel the group to approach the High Court for intervention.
The mosque committee, led by President Mohammed Latif, has reiterated its commitment to adhering to legal directives and maintaining communal harmony. The committee has faced financial challenges in executing the demolition and has appealed for support to expedite the process. Meanwhile, the state administration has called for restraint and assured all parties of a lawful and peaceful resolution to the dispute.
The Sanjauli Mosque controversy underscores the complexities surrounding unauthorized constructions and the sensitivities of religious structures. The situation highlights the necessity for transparent legal processes, effective administrative action, and community engagement to resolve such disputes amicably and uphold communal harmony.
