Rescue and Relief Efforts Underway as Rains Lash Dakshina Kannada, HRS Clears Flooded Drains in Mangaluru’s Bunder Area

Mangaluru: With incessant rains triggering landslides and urban flooding across parts of Dakshina Kannada, emergency response efforts have been intensified. Assembly Speaker UT Khader, currently on Haj pilgrimage, has been remotely coordinating with district officials, urging them to mobilise rescue teams, prepare NDRF units, and extend relief to affected families.

Landslides in Ullal taluk and flooding in low-lying areas of the Ullal City Municipality have caused damage to homes and led to casualties in villages like Bellma and Manjanady. Khader assured that compensation and rehabilitation would be prioritised, and that a special officer will oversee the situation.

Meanwhile, the Humanitarian Relief Society (HRS) has emerged as a key player in on-the-ground relief efforts in Mangaluru city. In the Bunder locality – one of the worst-hit due to clogged drainage systems – HRS volunteers were seen clearing stormwater drains, canals, and gutters under heavy rain. Their swift intervention helped water recede from residential and commercial areas, preventing further damage and easing mobility for local residents.

Armed with rain gear, tools, and community coordination, the HRS teams worked late into the evening, demonstrating the importance of civil society in disaster response. Residents praised the volunteers for stepping in where municipal systems were overwhelmed.

As more rain is forecast, district officials and relief organisations remain on high alert, urging the public to stay safe and report emergencies promptly.
