Resolve Imams’ Salary Issue: UMI Appeals to Delhi Govt. and Lt. Governor

New Delhi: The United Muslim of India (UMI) has expressed deep concern over the non-payment of salaries to 240 Imams and Muezzins under the Delhi Waqf Board for the past 17 months. UMI General Secretary Dr. Syed Ahmed Khan has called for the resolution of the issue without any political interference, urging the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and the Delhi Government to take immediate action.

Dr. Khan emphasised that these Imams and Muezzins provide dedicated services in mosques governed by the Delhi Waqf Board. Despite their meagre salaries, they have continued to perform their duties diligently even after 17 months without pay. The delay has caused immense hardship, with many struggling to meet daily expenses, including school fees for their children.

He highlighted the deteriorating financial situation of the Imams and Muezzins, who have been left to seek assistance in vain. Dr. Khan pointed out that they had made two attempts to meet with Aam Aadmi Party convenor and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at his residence. Although an appointment was scheduled, Mr. Kejriwal did not meet them, further aggravating their plight.

“The Imams and Muezzins neither have powerful political backing nor influential organisations to support their cause. This has made them vulnerable to being used as pawns in petty political games,” Dr. Khan said, adding that their noble work deserves respect and recognition.

Dr. Khan urged the Lieutenant Governor and the Delhi Government to set aside political differences and take swift action to release the pending salaries of the Imams.

“This matter should not be politicised; it requires empathy and immediate resolution to ensure the dignity of those serving in such a sacred capacity,” he stated.
