New Delhi— The official X account of the globally renowned news agency Reuters has been blocked in India in response to what is described as a “legal demand.” The action came to light late Saturday evening, with users attempting to access the handle @Reuters seeing a message that reads: “@Reuters has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand”, reported the Mint.
As of now, neither Reuters nor the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has provided any official statement or explanation regarding the move. The reason behind the legal demand and subsequent action remains unclear.
Interestingly, while the main Reuters handle is inaccessible, several affiliated X accounts continue to be available in India. These include @ReutersTech, @ReutersFactCheck, @ReutersPictures, @ReutersAsia, and @ReutersChina — suggesting that the block may be limited in scope or content-specific.
Reuters, a key division of the Thomson Reuters group, is one of the world’s largest and most respected news organizations. It operates with a vast network of more than 2,600 journalists across over 200 global locations. The agency is known for its wide-ranging, real-time news coverage in areas including politics, economics, conflict zones, and international affairs.
The sudden restriction has sparked questions and concerns over media freedom and transparency in digital regulations in India, especially as no official communication has been made public.
This is a developing story and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
