New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid questioned a journalist’s decision to label him a Muslim leader while seeking his response on the recent blasts in Delhi. Khurshid stopped the journalist mid question and said he never asked the reporter about his religious identity and expected the same courtesy.
Khurshid said he stood with the journalist in the same capacity as any citizen. He added that he would accept the term Muslim leader only in a situation related to prayer. He said religious identity should not be used in political or public discourse while discussing issues of national concern. He explained that his responsibilities and worries stem from his position as an Indian citizen, not from his faith.
When asked about the video released by Dr Umar, the accused linked to the blast, Khurshid said he was not a police officer and that authorised party spokespersons would speak on party positions. He stressed that the issue required clarity, not speculation.
Reporters also questioned him on claims about the rise of white collar terrorism. Khurshid said no act of violence was acceptable, regardless of who was involved. He urged people to speak with caution and knowledge on matters of national security. He said political statements should not distract from serious investigations.
Khurshid also responded to questions related to recent comments made by leaders from Jammu and Kashmir. He said the situation was sensitive and required informed discussions. He said the focus should remain on the country’s safety and on information verified through proper channels.
