Sam Pitroda Calls for Stronger Ties with India’s Neighbours

New Delhi: Indian Overseas Congress chief and senior Congress leader Sam Pitroda has urged the government to place greater emphasis on strengthening relations with neighboring countries. Speaking in an interview, Pitroda said India’s foreign policy should prioritize its immediate neighborhood, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

He described his visits to Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal as experiences where he felt at home, citing cultural and social similarities across the region. “They look like me, they talk like me, they eat my food, and they enjoy my songs,” Pitroda said, stressing the need for peace and cooperation. He added that despite challenges like terrorism and violence, the region shares a common heritage that must be preserved.

Pitroda also pointed out the political and economic turbulence in Bangladesh and internal instability in Nepal. He argued that India has a responsibility to engage constructively with its neighbors to build stability and trust.

The veteran technocrat, who played a key role during Rajiv Gandhi’s government in the 1980s, has been a long-time adviser to the Gandhi family. His recent comments contrast with some of his earlier controversial remarks but underline his consistent call for dialogue over confrontation.

Earlier this year, Pitroda courted debate by questioning India’s security posture toward China. At that time, he argued that the threat from Beijing was exaggerated and said collaboration was more important than conflict.

Pitroda’s fresh remarks are expected to reignite discussions on India’s foreign policy direction and its approach toward neighboring nations.
