Sambhal Shahi Jama Masjid Survey: Advocate Commissioner Seeks Extension Due to Ill Health

Sambhal: The highly anticipated survey report of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, expected to be submitted to the civil court on Monday, has been delayed after Advocate Commissioner Ramesh Singh Raghav sought a 15-day extension citing health issues. The court is set to decide on the extension plea later today at 4 PM.

Raghav, addressing reporters, said, “The survey report is in its final stages and ready for submission. However, I have been unwell with fever for the past few days and could not complete the analysis. I have requested the court for additional time to finalise the report.” He confirmed that the report, once ready, would be presented in a sealed envelope.

The survey, ordered by the court on November 19, was initiated following a plea by the Hindu side claiming the mosque was built by Mughal emperor Babur in 1526 after demolishing a temple. However, tensions escalated on November 24 during the second round of the survey, as clashes erupted between protesting locals and security personnel. The violence claimed the lives of five Muslim youth and injuries to dozens.

Advocate Zafar Ali, representing the Muslim side, emphasised that the report would remain sealed until further judicial proceedings. He added, “The next steps will depend on the decisions of the High Court and the Supreme Court. No immediate action will be taken before that.”

The Supreme Court, in its November 29 directive, had asked the Sambhal trial court to halt proceedings in the case while urging the Uttar Pradesh government to maintain peace and harmony in the violence-stricken town. This ruling followed widespread unrest and growing concerns over communal tensions in the region.

The mosque’s survey continues to draw nationwide attention, reflecting broader debates about historical claims and contemporary communal dynamics. As the court deliberates on the advocate commissioner’s plea, local authorities remain on high alert to prevent any further disturbances.

The Supreme Court’s directive remains in effect, with all actions paused until further notice.

The Uttar Pradesh government has deployed additional forces to Sambhal to ensure peace.

Political parties have called for restraint and urged citizens to uphold harmony amid the legal process.

The outcome of today’s hearing is awaited with keen interest, as it could influence the trajectory of this contentious case.
