New Delhi: The South Asian Minorities Lawyers Association (SAMLA) has strongly condemned the recent incident inside the Supreme Court of India, where a senior lawyer allegedly attempted to throw a shoe at the Chief Justice of India. The association described the act as “a symbolic assault on the dignity of the Supreme Court, the highest temple of justice.”
In an official communication to the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), SAMLA stated that the incident went beyond an insult to an individual and represented an attack on the ideals of constitutional morality and judicial decorum. “To target the Chief Justice on grounds of faith or caste is to wound the soul of our constitutional morality. Such conduct is a stain upon the gown we wear and the profession we cherish,” the statement said.
SAMLA expressed deep pain and firm condemnation, warning that the episode was an attempt to spread discord and weaken the moral integrity of the judiciary. The association said that such actions were “far more grievous than any physical violence,” as they eroded the values of justice, equality, and respect on which the legal profession stands.
Secretary General Feroz Khan Ghazi, in his letter to the SCBA President, urged bar councils and legal bodies across the country to unite in condemning the act. He said the legal fraternity must protect the sanctity of the courts and the honour of the profession. “This was not a moment of shame for one individual but a test for the entire legal community,” the statement added.
SAMLA concluded by reaffirming its faith in the Supreme Court and the principles of justice and the rule of law. The association called upon all lawyers to uphold restraint, dignity, and respect in every form of dissent and discourse.
