Sanjauli Mosque Case Raises Alarm Over Vigilante Demolition Demands

Shimla: A Hindu right wing group in Himachal Pradesh has renewed pressure on civic authorities over the Sanjauli mosque dispute, raising fresh concerns among Muslim groups about safety, due process, and communal targeting. Members of the Dev Bhoomi Hindu Sangharsh Samiti submitted a memorandum to the Shimla Municipal Corporation Commissioner, demanding immediate demolition of two alleged unauthorised floors of the mosque.

The group cited High Court directions and set December 29 as a deadline for action. It also offered to carry out the demolition free of cost if civic authorities or the mosque management did not act. The offer drew attention due to its public nature and the language used during media interactions.

Group representatives claimed delay in enforcement and accused the state administration of selective action. They questioned police responses during earlier protests and framed the issue as unequal application of law. Such remarks intensified unease among local Muslims, who view the matter as sensitive and sub judice.

The Sanjauli mosque issue already remains before the High Court. The Himachal Pradesh Waqf Board has moved the court, and judicial proceedings continue. Legal observers stress that court monitored processes exist to resolve disputes related to religious structures and land use.

Muslim community members stress the need for restraint and lawful procedure. They point out that demolition activity, especially when proposed by non state actors, risks escalation and public disorder. They urge authorities to ensure protection of worship places and community members during ongoing legal review.

Civic officials acknowledged receipt of the memorandum and assured appropriate steps at the right time. No demolition activity has taken place so far.
