SC to Hear Plea Against Demolition of Properties in Jamia Nagar Next Week

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear next week a petition challenging the demolition drive in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar area. The plea, filed by some local residents and activists, seeks a stay on the demolition of alleged illegal constructions, arguing that it was being carried out without following due process of law, reported the Madhyamam.
The petitioners claim that the demolitions have disproportionately affected the Muslim-majority neighbourhood, with notices not being served in time or, in some cases, not at all. The plea contends that this violates fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution, including the right to shelter and livelihood.
Earlier, demolition notices were reportedly issued by local municipal authorities targeting several properties in the Batla House area of Jamia Nagar. Several civil society groups and human rights organisations have expressed concern over what they view as a selective targeting of minority communities.
The apex court is expected to take up the matter for hearing next week, providing a ray of hope to affected families awaiting legal relief.
